Sleep: The First Domino in Your Health & Wellness

You can have all of your wellness in place, but if your sleep is falling apart, it can start to knock down everything else with it.

Think about a row of dominoes. Each one represents a different area of your life: nutrition, movement, stress, emotions, recovery, relationships, even the way you show up for yourself.

Sleep is one of the first dominoes in that row. When it falls, it has a way of taking everything else down with it.

So you can be doing all the “right” things and still not show up as your best self if your sleep is lacking.

Sleep doesn’t necessarily replace the other pieces.

But it certainly helps keep them standing.

Doing It All Right, Always

You can eat nutritious food.

You can exercise.

You can meditate for 30 minutes every day.

You can journal.

You can practice gratitude.

You can go to therapy.

You can have the hard conversations.

You can work on your relationships.

You can be incredibly intentional about your health.

And still feel like something isn’t clicking.

Like something is missing.

Sometimes the missing piece isn’t another habit.

It’s usually a lot simpler than adding more things to your routine.

Sometimes what your body needs is REST.

RESTORE the Body

Around here, we always start with restoration.

Why?

Because it’s the piece that creates the foundation for everything else. You can’t expect to live well if you can’t rest well.

RESTORE isn’t about adding more habits or doing more in general. It’s about learning to recognize what your body truly needs in order to recover.

We’re constantly recovering from different things:

  • Workouts.

  • Stress.

  • Long workdays.

  • Meetings.

  • Emotional overload.

  • Life.

And while sleep isn’t the only way we restore, it is one of the most overlooked.

Quality sleep is one of the most powerful forms of restoration we have.

We often treat sleep like the thing we do once everything else is finished.

But what if sleep is actually one of the things that allows everything else to work better?

Nutrition: Sleep Affects Your Choices

Did you know that when we don’t sleep well, the areas of our brain involved in decision-making and impulse control don’t function as well?

Think about your own experience.

When you don’t sleep well, what kinds of foods do you crave?

What about when you sleep well?

When you’re rested, an apple with peanut butter can sound genuinely satisfying. When you’re exhausted, that bag of chips sitting in the pantry suddenly has a very convincing sales pitch.

And there’s a reason for that.

Carbohydrates are one of the body’s quickest and most accessible sources of energy. When we’re tired and looking for energy, it makes sense that foods our bodies can break down quickly can become especially appealing.

The problem isn’t carbohydrates.

Our brains need glucose to function, and carbohydrates are an important source of that fuel.

The bigger question is where those carbohydrates are coming from.

An apple, a sweet potato, oats, or a piece of whole-grain sourdough can provide carbohydrates along with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

A bag of chips can provide a quick source of energy, too—but it doesn’t come with the same nutritional package.

And when you’re exhausted, your brain is also having a harder time with decision-making and impulse control. So that quick, easy source of energy can become even harder to resist.

Sleep doesn’t make you better at nutrition because you suddenly have more willpower.

It can simply make it easier to recognize what your body needs, make a decision, and choose the food that will actually support you.

Sometimes the difference between reaching for the apple with peanut butter and reaching for the chips isn’t a lack of knowledge.

It’s capacity.

And sleep helps give you more of it.

Movement: Sleep Gives You Something to Work With

Imagine that while you sleep, a team of tiny helpers comes into your muscles and tissues and gets to work repairing and restoring everything you asked your body to do that day.

It’s not literally what happens, of course—but it’s not a terrible way to picture it.

Sleep is a major part of how your body recovers.

If you’re someone who is active and exercises regularly but constantly feels like you need extra time between movement days, it may be worth looking at your sleep.

Because if you’re consistently sleeping poorly, your body simply doesn’t have the same opportunity to recover from the work you’re asking it to do.

And it’s not just about soreness.

When you’re sleeping well, you have more capacity to put effort into the movement you’re doing.

You can lift.

You can run.

You can walk.

You can play.

You can stay out on the court a little longer.

You can actually enjoy your workout instead of counting down until it’s over.

You can have the perfect workout program and split, but you can’t out-program exhaustion.

The goal isn’t simply to do more.

It’s to have the energy and recovery capacity to do what matters to you.

Stress Management: You Can’t Meditate Your Way Out of Exhaustion

You meditate.

You do breathwork.

You journal.

You practice gratitude.

You take walks.

You create boundaries.

Those things matter.

A lot.

But if your nervous system is constantly running on empty because you’re consistently not sleeping well, those tools may feel like they’re barely touching the surface.

Let me be clear: sleep isn’t a replacement for stress-management techniques.

Sleep is part of stress management.

And this isn’t necessarily about sleeping more.

It’s about sleeping better.

Because when your body has the opportunity to truly restore, you have more capacity to handle what life asks of you while you’re awake.

EMBODY: Listening to What Your Body Is Telling You

This is one of the reasons we talk so much about awareness inside RESET.

Your body is constantly communicating with you.

Sometimes it says, I’m hungry.

Sometimes it says, I need to move.

Sometimes it says, I need a break.

And sometimes it says, I am exhausted.

The problem is that we’re really good at ignoring that last one.

We push through.

We drink another cup of coffee.

We tell ourselves we’ll catch up on sleep this weekend.

We keep going because there are things to do.

But embodying wellness means learning to notice what your body is communicating—and responding to it instead of constantly overriding it.

Sleep is one of the clearest places where that relationship can begin.

EASE: Emotional Health Gets Harder When You’re Tired

When we’re sleep deprived, we can become:

  • More irritable.

  • Less patient.

  • More reactive.

  • More emotionally overwhelmed.

  • Less able to see perspective.

  • More likely to interpret situations negatively.

  • Less capable of having a difficult conversation calmly.

It’s almost like a veil comes over you.

The conversation that might have been uncomfortable when you’re rested can feel impossible when you’re exhausted.

The small annoyance becomes a huge frustration.

The disagreement becomes an argument.

The thing you could normally let go of suddenly feels like a hill you absolutely have to die on.

And suddenly you’re trying to control situations, other people, and even yourself a little more tightly.

Therapy still matters.

Difficult conversations still matter.

Processing your emotions still matters.

But sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do before trying to solve the problem is sleep.

STABILIZE: Sleep Helps You Regulate

Once sleep is disrupted, it can become easier for everything else to become inconsistent.

You’re too tired to work out, so you skip your workout.

You snap at the kids and then feel guilty.

You can’t stop yawning, so you reach for something quick and convenient.

You don’t want what you packed for lunch, so you order out.

You have a harder time making decisions in a meeting.

Your partner needs your support, but you don’t have the energy to give it.

You feel overwhelmed, so you stay up late trying to get more done.

And then you sleep poorly again.

All of a sudden, you’ve created a new cycle.

One domino knocks into another, and another, and another.

But here’s the thing:

If you keep the first domino standing, the others have a better chance of staying standing, too.

TRANSFORM: What Becomes Possible When You’re Rested?

When we talk about transformation here, we don’t mean completely overhauling your life and becoming a brand-new person.

That’s cool...

But it’s also not usually necessary.

Sometimes transformation looks like:

  • Having the energy to show up for your family.

  • Having patience for your kids.

  • Enjoying your workout instead of surviving through it.

  • Making a meal instead of grabbing whatever is easiest.

  • Having a tough conversation instead of avoiding it.

  • Having enough emotional capacity to actually enjoy your life.

  • Having enough energy left at the end of the day to do something that brings you joy.

You don’t need every single part of your life to be perfect before offering your body rest.

In fact, rest should be one of the things you build the rest of your life on.

Rest is a huge part of the way you transform your life—not because sleep magically fixes everything, but because it gives you more capacity to participate in the life you’re trying to create.

Sleep Isn’t Separate

Our RESET framework is set up in such a way that we talk a lot about sleep through RESTORE.

But that’s not the only place sleep shines.

It runs through the entire framework.

  • RESTORE – We learn how to recover and give the body what it needs.

  • EMBODY – We become more aware of what our body is communicating.

  • STABILIZE – We build rhythms and foundations that support consistency.

  • EASE – We create space to process stress and emotional load.

  • TRANSFORM – We begin living differently because our foundation has changed.

And sleep touches every single one.

Maybe you’ve been trying to fix your dominoes individually, one at a time.

You’ve been working on your nutrition.

You’ve been trying to exercise more.

You’ve been managing your stress better.

You’ve been moving through emotional overload.

You’ve been working on yourself.

But maybe the question isn’t:

“What else do I need to add?”

Maybe the question is:

“What would happen if I protected the first domino?”

Because sleep isn’t something that magically comes naturally after the rest of your life is in order.

It’s not something you earn once you take care of everything else.

Sleep is one of the things that helps you take care of everything else.

This is why sleep is one of the first things we address inside RESET.

Not because it’s the only thing that matters.

But because it influences so much of what comes next.

Sometimes the first step toward changing your life isn’t adding another domino.

It’s keeping the first one standing.
